Range Rover Sport EV Spotted Near Nurburgring Marking First Appearance

The highly anticipated all-electric variant of the Range Rover Sport has been captured on camera for the first time, undergoing tests near the Nurburgring track. Land Rover engineers are currently fine-tuning the vehicle’s suspension and traction control on wet tracks in preparation for its 2025 launch. The Range Rover Sport EV is set to join Land Rover’s growing lineup of electric models, including the Range Rover EV and Range Rover Velar EV.

Subtle Design Changes Reflect Electric Transition

Despite being an electric vehicle (EV), the Range Rover Sport EV prototype closely resembles its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart, maintaining Land Rover’s signature design language. The most noticeable change is the partially enclosed grille, similar to the one seen on the Range Rover EV. This feature, along with the absence of an exhaust system and yellow EV warning stickers, clearly signals that this is an electric vehicle. The exterior design follows the trend of minimal visual differentiation between ICE and EV models, unlike the upcoming Range Rover Velar EV, which is expected to showcase a completely new design.

Shared Architecture with Advanced Electric Technology

Built on Land Rover’s Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA), the Range Rover Sport EV shares its core electrical components with other electric models in the lineup. This includes an advanced 800-volt battery pack and electric drive units, which are expected to deliver superior performance and range. The platform, also used in the combustion models, supports both powertrains, ensuring a seamless transition to electric while maintaining the vehicle’s hallmark capabilities.

Enhanced Traction Control for Superior Off-Roading

One of the most significant advantages of the Range Rover Sport EV is its improved traction control system. Leveraging the electric motors' ability to individually distribute torque, the EV version promises a more responsive and efficient off-road experience than its ICE predecessor. The reaction time for distributing torque in the electric variant is expected to drop from 100 milliseconds to just one millisecond, allowing the Range Rover Sport EV to perform better in challenging off-road conditions.

Aerodynamics and Efficiency: Room for Improvement

While the prototype remains largely similar to its ICE counterpart, there are a few areas where further refinements are expected before the production model is released. The current wheels on the prototype are standard ICE wheels, rather than the more aerodynamic "aero" wheels typically found on electric vehicles. This suggests that the production model may receive design adjustments to improve efficiency, which is crucial for EV performance.

Launching in 2025: A Glimpse into the Future

The Range Rover Sport EV is expected to officially launch in 2025, making it one of the first electric-powered variants in Land Rover’s prestigious Range Rover lineup. With its advanced electric drivetrain, improved traction control, and minimal design changes, the Range Rover Sport EV promises to deliver the luxury, performance, and off-road capabilities that the brand is known for—all while embracing a cleaner, more sustainable future.
