The Scout Traveler is set to make waves in the world of electric off-road vehicles as Volkswagen Group’s electric spin on the legendary International-Harvester Scout. Known for its rugged dependability, the Scout has a storied history that Scout Motors, Volkswagen’s new U.S.-based brand, is aiming to honor with this bold all-electric reboot. Here’s what we know about the 2027 Scout Traveler so far.

Homage to an Icon: Design and Nostalgia Meet Innovation

The 2027 Scout Traveler concept is a loving tribute to the original Scout II’s design. Scout Motors has infused the new Traveler with signature styling cues like the angled rear side windows and split tailgate, alongside a frunk (front trunk) that offers space for adventure essentials, complete with power outlets and USB ports. This design not only evokes the Scout II’s spirit but adds refined, modern lines that give it a unique and updated presence.

An Interior With Throwback Appeal and Modern Comforts

Inside, the Traveler channels the Scout II’s iconic 1970s interiors with bright colors and a classic beam-style dash, but upgrades abound. Modern screens replace traditional gauges, yet the driver’s display retains a retro ribbon-style speedometer for a nostalgic feel. Tactile controls, including mechanical switches and dials, ensure that this electric vehicle provides a physical connection to its functionality. With options like a panoramic sunroof and an open-air Cabana Top, the Traveler blends the past with a luxurious, modern twist.

Built for Adventure: Performance and Off-Road Prowess

The 2027 Traveler promises to be more than a pretty face, with serious off-road capability. Powered by a two-motor electric system, the Traveler delivers up to 1,000 lb-ft of torque and can reach 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. Built with body-on-frame construction, a live rear axle, and off-road features such as mechanically-locking differentials and front sway bar disconnects, it’s primed for rough terrain. Optional 35-inch tires and a water-fording capability of up to three feet ensure the Traveler can conquer varied terrains.

All-Electric Power With a Range Extender Option

The Scout Traveler will come as an all-electric SUV with a 350-mile range on a full charge. However, the optional Harvester gasoline range extender can boost the range up to 500 miles, providing versatility for longer journeys. Equipped with an 800-volt architecture, the Traveler supports DC fast charging up to 350 kilowatts and bi-directional charging, which lets it share power when needed.
